Installation and repairs: the job is not finished at the gate

A crate of finished stainless is not an install. Set-out, level, seal and the first month of callbacks belong to the same workshop that made the parts.

In short
  • Install is set-out and making good, not dropping crates.
  • The crew who fabricated it should be the crew who level it.
  • A repair in the first month is part of the job, not a new quote argument.

We install what we make, across Australia. Most weeks that is Sydney. Some weeks it is Melbourne, Brisbane or Canberra. That sounds obvious until you have watched a third-party crew try to level a servery they did not fold, with a drawing they did not read, on a floor that was never the datum. Installation is where fabrication either proves itself or gets blamed for the building.

What install actually is

  1. Set out from a datum that still exists, not from a chalk line that left with the concreter.
  2. Dry-fit, then fix. If a panel is wrong, it goes back on the ute, it does not get cut in the room.
  3. Level, join and seal. Adjustable feet exist because slabs do not.
  4. Protect the finish until the other trades are gone, then peel, clean and hand over.

We also need the site to be ready. Floor down, or we are packing forever. Services in the right place, or we are cutting a bench that was already right. A window in the programme when a hood can go up without a painter working under it.

Repairs after handover

If something we installed needs adjusting in the first month, we come back. A foot that will not take a fall, a door that binds, a joint that needs a dress. That is the job. A failure caused by a trolley strike or a cleaner with steel wool is a different conversation, and we will still come and tell you which it is.

  • Movement, level and doors: we own those.
  • Impact, misuse and chloride cleaners: we will repair them, as a repair.
  • Something that failed twice in the same place: that is a design change, not another weld.

When a repair is a new fabrication

A cracked bracket, a rusted coastal rail, a hood that no longer matches a new cook line: sometimes the honest install is a new part. We would rather say that on the phone than weld over a section that will fail again in six months.

Handover is photographs and a clean floor. The install is finished when the first month has been quiet.

What to send

If it is a new install: the programme dates for floor, ceiling and shopfront, and the city in Australia. If it is a repair: photographs, when it was installed, and what changed. We will tell you whether we are coming with a spanner or a drawing.

Pickling, passivation and the finish nobody specifies

Fabrication makes stainless steel less stainless. Pickling and passivation put back what grinding and welding took out, and it is the step most often skipped.

Mobile welding: what can be fixed on site and what cannot

A mobile unit can make a broken thing safe within hours. Whether it can make it right depends on access, ventilation and what the failure actually was.

On-site welding: when the job should stay on site

A mobile unit can weld in a plant room this afternoon. Whether it should is a question of access, finish and whether the part can come off the wall.
